Do I need to purchase insurance before I buy a new car?

I am on my parent's policy (Geico) right now and am the sole driver on one of their cars. I am buying a new car this weekend and going on my own insurance (Progressive) with the new car. Do I need to get the new insurance before driving the car off the lot? How do I do this without having the VIN number or loan company yet? Will my parent's insurance cover me for a few days until I get my own? I live in Florida.

  1. The dealership will fax the VIN number to your insurance company, they will fax the dealership temporary insurance slip, its all taken care of at the time you purchase the car before you drive off the lot.
  2. Yes! before they will let you drive the car off the lot. Dealership can insure the car but the cost is a "LOT LOWER" if you do it before you get there.
  3. If you currently have insurance on a car you drive, you have 30 days to transfer the coverage to your new car. However, you probably want to get some quotes with the car you are buying so the insurance cost is not a surprise. I have never had a dealer fax a bill of sale to an insurance company. That is between you and your lender. Not sure how old you are or the circumstances, but you should try to stay under your parents policy with your new car. It will be much cheaper.
