How long do you keep your no claims if you are not currently using it?

My husband has full UK no claims discount, but is not insuring a vehicle with it this year, next year he will want to use it again to insure a car for our son to learn in. Will he still be able to use his no claims discount or will he have to start at the beginning again? He hasnt had a claim or a ban or anything, he is driving on my insurance in my car and has a classic car policy on an old TVR for this year and you cant use your no claims on those. Thanks if you know the answer.

1. I think your no claims bonus can be held for 12 months but would check with your insurance company.
