Insuring Car in Massachusetts But...?

Ok...bought a car 5 months ago in N.C., paid sales tax and insured it there. Moved to Massachusetts and the insurance co. is trying to tell me I have to pay sales tax again ($800). Does anyone know anything about this?? ok...what I have learned so far. Answerer #2 was correct with the Use Tax. However, MA has a reciprocity agreement with N.C., so I will have to pay the difference of 2% (5% in MA, and 3% in N.C.). So...a couple hundred vs. 800+. The tax is assessed at the registry of motor vehicles. I had too call the MA Dept. of Revenue for answers. Now...we'll see what happens at the counter of the RMV.

  1. you should not have to pay sales tax but once on a car. you will have to pay property tax on it though. I would suggest changing insurance carriers though. all they can do is change your insurance premiums. iwould check with the local cmv and see what you need to pay.
  2. It's not technically a sales tax, it's a "use tax" which is designed to prevent people from buying things in states with lower taxes and bringing them to states with higher taxes. But technicalities aside, yes it is legit and you need to pay it.
  3. Go back to your policy or you can compare it also to other car insurance company and seek some information from there.
