Do new car prices vary from state to state?

I live in Chicago and am planning on buying a new car. Indiana is about 15 minutes away and I'm wondering if I would get a better deal from there. I know that dealerships in the suburbs are cheaper than ones in the city. But would another state offer better deals?

  1. yes it's different from state to state
  2. Prices do vary by state. The difference is there will be no discount between the 2 areas as they are so close to each other. Areas where the economy suffers sometimes have smaller incentives compared to others. Most incentives are also based on regions and not states. why don't you research your car online at edmunds.com or go to the manufacturers website and do the same as well as check incentives for your region by typing in your zip code. You can then, if you research other zipcodes, check incentives there to see if different.
  3. Where I live, it's not just that the suburbs are cheaper...the less-affluent suburbs are cheaper than the more upscale suburbs.
  4. Yes. Different cars are in different levels of demand, different dealers may get more or less cars than they need, and delivery charges (the cost of getting the car to a particular dealership) can vary by how far the car has to go. Also, tax, title, and license can vary a LOT from state to state.
  5. All these people are wrong!!! The MSRP and the Invoice are exactly the same in every state. Even the transportation cost is the same. They just average the transportation cost. You will sometimes get a regional discount to the dealer and not the buyer, but 15 minutes, NOPE.
