Buy used cheap car or fix old?

I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe. It will not pass next years inspection due to excessive rust. Should I pay to have this rust fixed, keep in mind there may be other problems with the car. Or I could buy a used car for up to $1,500- If a different car is suggested than what would you recommend purchasing? NO LINKS PLEASE!!!

  1. I've never heard of rust being a reason for failing inspection. Anyway, it depends on how many miles are on the car, the condition of the engine/transmission, how much you like the car, etc.
  2. Well, if we can afford the gas, that 96 Chevy Tahoe with less than 200k should do you fine. But gas keeps rising. I have a 2003 Yukon and am considering unloading it for the gas pretty soon....if the right opportunity comes along. So many things to consider, cause it generally is good transportation. $1500 won't buy much car these days.
  3. Never heard of rust failing a car. Where has he been. Fixing rust can get very expensive real fast. A truck is not worth that kind of expense. $1500 is not going to buy you much of a car. Avoid all the Japanese junk is all I can recommend.
