Overhaulin'

In NJ, when I buy a car from a used dealer, can I buy it already inspected?

I'm about to buy a cheap car, that is apparently in good conditions, the mechanic already approved of it, but it is not inspected yet, and the dealer wants the money right away because he says after I do the inspection I've already done all the paper work to my name, and he won't take it back. He says he can't do the inspection himself because he's a dealer and not the owner, but he guarantees that it will pass inspection (just with his word). So, does someone know exactly how these deals work, because I'm young, I don't have a guy who knows about cars around, and I don't wanna get scammed. Thank you for your help.

  1. It's New Jersey law that any car sold has to pass inspection, or else have a label stating that it can't. SO it's not "just with his word." If you have had an independent mechanic OK it, then you should be fine.
