1. VW diesel. Hybirds need batteries replaced at sometime,which can run over $8,000.
2. My Saturn Ion gets 32-36mpg city and 40-46 hwy. Its a 2.2L MTX with no options at all. Theyre replacing it with the Astra so you can get one cheap. __ The Honda Insight is the only hybrid where battery replacement has been a problem. That was due to people driving them too hard and was not a problem with the auto tranny since it would keep you from forcing it to drain the battery.
3. Best vehicle in my opinion for fuel mileage is a VW TDI. Fuel mileage really improves with the correct European nozzles and higher fuel pressure. My friend has two of them that he modified and consistently gets in the high 50's with a manual transmission. He has modified quite a few for other people and they also get the same mileage.
