How do I transfer a car title after only 3 weeks, while having a "in transit" tag?

I bought a car on Ebay a few weeks ago and got the conneticut title from the previous owner. I got a 30 day "in transit" tag, planning to register it in Kansas when I moved. On my way to Kansas the car engine threw a rod in St Louis. So I parked the car and want to sell it "as is" quickly because it's not worth the cost of a new engine to me. To sell it do I have to finish the registration process? If so can I do that in St Louis? Or can I transfer the car directly to the new owner with a bill of sale?

  1. Every state handles this differently. You should contact the DMV and ask. You will likely have to get the title registered in your name. You can usually do this without having to pay for license plates. That really sucks that the motor let loose.
  2. Legally you are supposed to finish the registration process, but some people have been known to skip the original process in order to avoid sales tax. But that's not legal so be careful.
  3. If you have the Conneticut title, properly released by the previous owner, you can use that, along with a bill of sale to sell the car. If it's under ten yrs old, an odometer disclosure form must be completed, as well. You can sell it in St Louis, if it's more convenient for you. Junkyards will purchase a car like this, as long as you have the title.
