What does it mean when a vehicle description says it is a clone?

I was looking at classic cars and some of them say "clone". For example: 1967 Chevy Camaro SS, Clone. Does it mean that the engines numbers don't match? That it is made from scratch? (No original chasis) Or that it is a restored vehicle with modern parts? Any other information relating to this would help.

  1. A clone is a copy, not the original....as for cars my understanding is it made from a car building kit.........
  2. It's not an SS. It's a basic model that the parts and paint have been changed to the premium model. Important to know when deciding value.
  3. A clone car is usually a lesser model made to look like a more desirable one. A 1967 Camaro SS can be made to look like a Yenko Camaro with the graphics, paint, wheels, motor etc. I had a 1964 Chevy SS Impala that had a 283 automatic and I put a 409, 425 HP motor in it. The vin number indicated it was a V8 and when you put on the emblems, its difficult to dispute it being a legit 409 car. There are several cars going through the Barrett Jackson auction that say "re-manufactured," which is saying they are not original.
  4. A clone is usually a model under the one being advertised. Chrome trim, grills, paint, interior options, wheels, engine, rear will be changed to match the exact specs on the SS. Although a clone is a "fake", one that is done very well can still demand big money.
  5. It means that it has been modified to look like something that's worth more money. For instance, in this case, it wasn't originally an SS. Originally, it was a six cylinder grannymobile. Now it looks like an SS.
