Will an aftermarket intake cause my car to fail emissions in New York?
I am thinking about buying a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS from a dealer. The car has an after market intake installed on the engine. Would this cause me to fail an emissions test? I live on Long Island New York.

- Most aftermarket intakes come with carb e.o. numbers. I'm pretty sure depending on what brand has that info. Inquire through local performance shops to see what your state emission laws are. Choose brands such as AEM, Greddy, HKS, or injen they definitely have e.o. #s.
- generally speaking NO, I have a 1999 toyota with an aftermarket intake and have passed every inspection.
- In the state of New York a car being sold by a licensed car dealer has to be inspected..... In order to pass inspection the inspection station plugs its computer in to the cars OBD2 service port to see if the emissions system is working and the check engine light is off. If theres an error or service code the computer will NOT pass the car and he can not sell it to you until its repaired........ I should point something out.... Even if it passes you might want to avoid this car..... Most of the people that put these these intakes on these cars are kids -- 16 to 21 years olds. And lets be honest about those kinds of drivers? They most likely werent driving like the old lady off to the pharmacy..... Your better off purchasing a car that was driven by the nurse at the hospital or some other responsible person..... If a car has intakes, signs there was custom wiring to huge stereos, underbody neon kits, etc then avoid the car..... Somebody was most likely getting his fast and furious on....... If the check engine lights on then avoid... If the dealer is selling you the car open title -- meaning the place where they buyers name goes is empty and doesnt have his or another dealers name on the title and there is no associated MV50 form then he may be hiding something or is selling it that way to avoid the warranty..... Ask to look at the title.... If the buyers name is empty and he has you sign it there then somethings fishy. Buy law he has to have his or another dealers name there that accepted the trade..........
