when a car is discontinued, does the resale value drop?

Assume it's a newer model car (not a classic)

  1. well know depends what it is and how long its been discontinued, ever heard of the auction in Scott's Dale Arizona where the past sells for mega bucks
  2. Not usually, no. Mostly used car values are based on mileage and condition. If they still make new cars of the same name does not usually come into play. And most of the times today, if a car name is discontinued, the same basic car is still made, it just may look a little different with a different name badge on it. Just a ploy by the car manufactures to get you to look at new cars. You won't look at a new Ford Taurus as much as you would a new Ford Five Hundred.
  3. For the most part the answer is yes. Right now you can buy a 2005 Ford Taurus with less than 20,000 miles for around $11,000.00. These cars had a window sticker of $23,000.00. All Oldsmobiles, old body style Ford F150's, Chevy Ventures, etc. values have dropped tremendously as soon as they were replaced. Don't take my word for it check out the vehicle's value at www.kbb.com or www.edmunds.com . The only exception to this would be an exotic or performance car.
