How to build a house for cheaper...?

I want to build a house in central ohio. Using a custom home builder to build a home on my land seems like it can be a little expensive. what are some of the cheapest ways to build a nice home? One that looks like any other around, NOT like adobe or anything. I've heard that open panel construction can be cheaper, but is their anything any cheaper? I want to build between a 5000 sf and a 5500 sf home. the plan I'm looking at is at the following website: http://www.eplans.com/house-plans.hwx/Q/Plan.HWEPL13418/searchId.128272061/offset.3 How much would it cost to build this plan, with possibly another 2 car garage, and a full walkout basement? For the interior fixtures and things like appliances and cabinets, I'm considering using Direct Buy, is this a good place to shop also, and what types of products do they offer, including construction ones? 2. Have you checked into prefab construction? It's not what most people think it is anymore...your plans ...1,2,3 story they can do almost anything... the cost is kept way down through saving on labor costs and quality of the structure is actually higher because it done indoors than assembled on site ..hope this helps....goodluck
