- buy a 3,000 dollar car and bank a grand. It would actually be cheaper to fix the tranny but who knows what could break after that. What kind of car is it and what kind of shape is it in,also how much IS the new tranny gonna cost?Things to consider.
- If you already own the car that needs a new transmission and know that everything else is OK, I'd fix the transmission. Unless you know the complete history of the $4000 car, how can you be sure that something else isn't wrong with it. You could buy it and something major goes wrong then you're back to where you started. EDIT: When buying a new car from a dealer you need to get a ballpark figure on what the invoice is and to not pay much over invoice. One place to get an idea is http://www.kbb.com I've never paid sticker and generally buy for "X amount" over invoice. I've even bought high end cars that had thousands of dollars added to the sticker, unfortunately it was a high demand, low production car that my wife REALLY wanted, and in this case had them drop the added on premium and paid sticker (yeah it killed me, but she HAD to have it). Know what you want, what you'll pay for it and be willing to walk out. I've walked out quite a few times and they have stopped me out in the lot and agreed to my price. End of the month, end of the quarter, and also when the dealer needs to make a sales quota will get you your best deal. Also don't sit around for hours while they bicker, give a certain amount of time and be willing to walk out.
