What small car should I buy in Australia for mainly city use?

Need a small, economic to run car, no kids, just office and shopping. I was thinking to buy a SMART fortwo, but Answers made me change my mind. I like the small 4x4 cars, like the Jeep Wrangler, but they are expensive to buy and to run. Budget AUD 20,000. Also should I go for a new car or a second hand? Any advice? THANKS! Is there anybody who would suggest the SMART instead????
