The government is raising the gas prices to motivated people to buy hybrid cars, all to stop global warming.?

I was washing dishes now and just It just hit me. What do ya'll think? I think this is the big plan to get people to stop pollution. New Govt conspiracy theory? Good Idea if you ask me.

1. No, that's not why. I don't think the government itself is raising the prices, the oil companies are. Most of us have heard this theory before. The fact that people are turning to more environmentally friendly vehicles is just the silver lining to a dire problem.
2. Supply and Demand controls the cost of gasoline. If you have what everyone wants, you sell it to the highest bidder.
3. If you are in the US, I seriously doubt it. The federal government is in denial there about the existence of global warming (at least the manmade bit). And I assume that fuel price rises have affected the whole country, not just individual states => it's not state governments. The real issue is that, due to the "market" - those people who try and make money to pay for people's pensions - the price of oil has tripled over the last three years or so. A proportion of fuel price goes on tax, but particularly in the US this isn't a large amount, and it hasn't changed much. This isn't due to a change in the cost of extraction - it's just financial speculation. The market isn't a tame animal - it drags the rest of the world up and down with it. In the UK, the government claims to be imposing taxes environmentally. However, given the way it does this, it looks far more as though it uses these taxes as a revenue stream.
4. Gas prices are controlled by wall street speculators. Ralph Nader's idea to tax these speculators would, at the very least, be a great short term fix.
5. i think your washing too many dishes.. the idiots at the stock market are just playing games . the stock market is just legalized gambling for the rich !!!
