did you know a boat can run on vegetable oil.it runs on loch katrine?

this boat has been modified to sail on the loch running on vegetable oil only.as loch katrine supplies the city of glasgow with it's water supply they needed to use fuel that was biodegradable should the boat sink or be in an accident.maybe they could modify the engines to be used in cars and commercial motor vehicles.

  1. Any diesel engine will run on vegetable oil.
  2. Yep, any diesel engine can run on used, filtered, vegetable oil!
  3. Really? Wow! People have been running diesel cars on vegetable oil for years.
  4. The technology to burn vegetable oil in a diesel has existed as long as the diesel engine. Otto's first diesel was powered by peanut oil. The only modification required to run on 100% bio diesel is that the vegetable oil is thicker than diesel and must be preheated to flow well enough to be used as fuel. The biggest issue is the amount of vegetable oil that is available. Petroleum based diesel is in far greater supply and is still cheaper to produce that commercial bio diesel. The changes that need to happen to the infrastructure concerning manufacture and distribution are yet to be developed. What we as citizens need to do is demand that bio diesel be made available to everyone as an alternative to petro diesel. I know, that I have to drive eighty miles to be B80 which is only 20% bio diesel. Supplies of straight vegetable oil such as used cooking oil, etc. are extremely limited and require filtering and some processing at home to use. We need to demand this product and be willing to pay a premium for it. Then our insatiable demands for petroleum will begin to diminish.
  5. I read of some guys in Wales running their cars on old Chip Shop oil and the only reason they got caught for tax evasion was because their exhaust was smelling of fish n chips! Apparently if you add a small bit of Turpentine to vegetable oil it runs diesel engines just as good as diesel!
