what sort of car modifications are considered illegal?

I just bought a new mazda 6, though I will mostly use it for work, i have always wanted to race and i am thinking about modifying it. I would like to get a body kit, engine upgrade, as well as the interior. However, where do i cross the line? Is it legal to use a racing stearing wheel without an airbag? what other modifications can be considered ilegal and what are the consequences?

  1. I would check with the person who does your inspections. As long as they would pass it I say do all you can to it.
  2. first of all, street racing is illegal. second of all, most modifications to cars are illegal as well. I am talking about major adjustments like removing the catylitic converter to gain a few extra horsepower or going without a muffler, both of which are illegal as well. Your car also must have an airbag to pass inspection. There are specific guidelines that your car must meet to pass inspection each year or six months depending on the state that you live in. Most body kits and engine upgrades are legal so long as they do not present a threat to yourself or the others around you. As far as i know, there is nothing you can do to the interior that is illegal as long as you've got floorboards. My dad is a mechanic and that is where i learned most of this, so i would ask your mechanic for any other questions that you have.
  3. Not sure on the steering wheel. I know a lot of people change them out though. Basically anything that deals with lights whether they are neon or HID or even adding fog lights is considered illegal in many states. Changing the color of a marker light from yellow to blue red or green will get you a ticket. If it was not factory it's illegal. Especially if you are living in NY. If it is fun, they want to give you a ticket. Also, window tint darker than 35%.
