Taxing my old car to sell it on.....?
I have the V5, and M.O.T. certificate however, I have changed my insurance over to my new car. I still have a valid insurance certificate for my old car - can I tax it at the post office using this insurance certificate?

- You might just get away with it.
- You can get away with it as long as you do it as soon as possible.
- No, if you have changed the insurance to your new car then the insurance is no longer valid. Now that things are computerised, it may well alert the DVLA if the car is taxed without valid insurance. Better to give the buyer the money off the car to tax it themselves- they can do this on the day provided they have an insurance cover note and the change of owner slip on the V5.
- Hi there, You are not supposed to but if you have everything that they ask for even though the insurance certificate is not valid for you old car but it states that it is vaild on paper then the post office will not know any better lol :P
- Yes as long as you do it as soon as possible at the post office. If you try to renew via the internet it wont work as the DVLA use computer records and will instantly know that your car isnt insured. The beauty of the old methods!!!
- i am assuming that you have stayed with your old insurance company and just got them to change over your old insurance to the new car..if this is the case then your old insurance certificate is no longer valid even if you still have it and the dates are valid as your insurance company will have cancelled it when your transfered over to your new car. if you use the old certificate then you run the risk of fraud because the dvla have records of all insurance policys and the insurance companys notifiy them when they cancel a policy
- Why waste money on tax? you can sell it without tax.
- Yes. You should not but you can. they will just look at the certificate and hand it straight back to you.
