Is it legal to sell your own car on the road?

We have a car that we have for sale signs on the windows and is parked on the road outside our house (as we don't have a driveway). We had a neighbour pass comment that she hoped we weren't going into selling cars. I'd heard that there was something not right about selling them. We asked a traffic warden and he wasn't 100% sure but had it was illegal andwe should check with the police. We are in the UK. Does anyone have any further information about this? Thanks

  1. I don't think it is legal, even if the car is taxed, MOTd and insured. Crazy I know. Round here the council love putting big stickers all over cars that have "For Sale" signs in the windows... Additional: Google threw this up: The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 The offence of selling vehicles on the road is intended to target those people who run a business selling and/or repairing motor vehicles and use the road as a mock showroom. A person will not be convicted if he can prove he was not acting for the purposes of a business.
  2. As long as the vehicle has an MOT,TAX,& INSURANCE, your ok to sell on the road side. Iv always done it.
  3. you can sell your car while parked on the road has long as it has got road tax. has you can go all over the place and will see cars being driven about and parked up with 4 sale signs so it is not a problem
  4. Course it's legal, as long as you aren't selling a different one every week. Honestly, we have done it hundreds of times (well, about five... nearly hundreds) and never had a problem.
  5. When I wanted to sell my car, the same thing happened to me. I looked up "how to sell your car" on the internet and found out that in California I could get a ticket for displaying a for sale sign on the window of my car in the street outside my own home! In the drive way, it is OK, and sometimes on private property. Just because "everybody does it" doesn't make it legal. I would hate for you to be the one who finds out. Be sure to check out what the law is in your area. They all seem to be different.
  6. It is illegal to sell more than two cars at the roadside. If you're just selling one car, you should be OK.
  7. yes you are allowed to sell your own car, as long as the car is legal, neighbour just being a pain, all the best
  8. It is lawful to offer your car for sale anywhere other than on private land where the owner objects. Think of it this way - if you're driving down the motorway with a "for sale" sign on the back - is that unlawful? Of course not! It is unlawful to offer a vehicle or vehicles for sale on the public road in the course of a business or trade. I think that's what your neightbour is getting at. (The unlawfulness is in not declaring you are a trader).
  9. I think there is a limit to how many you can sell but as long as it is road legal selling 1 isnt a problem
