New car purchase prices in Florida?

Do these prices seem a little high or about right? This is my first car (first title, tag, ect) $662 tax $659 title $279 new tag I bought the car at Kendall Toyota $7,998 - no need to scream ;) Sorry. The car I purchased was a used car an '04. There was only one previous owner and like I said, its the first car being registered under my name, hence new tag and veh registration.

  1. Tax is assessed on purchase price, in most counties...6 to 7.5% Title charge sounds high, dealer must be adding in his dealer fees of $295 to $495. I would question that one! New tag - if you have none to transfer there is an additional one time IMPACT charge.
  2. It is what it should be. Tax + title + license should be about 10% of the car purchase.
  3. The title fee sounds ridiculously high. Some unscrupulous dealers will tack on fees in hidden places to cover some of their extra fees like advertising or, in this economy, a weak few fiscal quarters. This is NOT your responsibility so I would have questioned the salesperson when I saw that. The new tag fee also seems very high if it isn't the first tag issued to this car (not you -- the car). I don't know of many $8000 new cars so I'm going to say you got ripped off there, too. A tag for a previously owned car should be $125 plus an electronic processing fee charged by the DMV in Florida. I think you might make a good case for them to cut you a check for at least a few hundred dollars. What they did was unethical and, in the state of Florida, illegal. Remind them of this and see what happens.
