What is the best time to buy a new car, Dec 2008 or Jan 2009?

I am planning to buy a new car and can wait till Jan 2009 for it. I will prefer to buy a 2009 model but OK with 2008 model as well if deal is right. What is the best time to buy a car ? Should I wait till Jan 2009 or go ahead and buy it right now? I am not planning to go for loan and will pay cash if it helps.

  1. If you are willing to do the homework and learn how to play the game, you can get great deals any time. Especially now when they are hurting to sell.
  2. Car dealers are looking to get rid of their inventory prior to Dec 31st to avoid paying taxes on inventory so the very best time to buy a car is late December. But you will need to visit Edmunds for True Market Value and other homework to make sure you are prepared to get the best deal possible.
  3. Go this month! December 31 would be the best because they are trying to make their numbers for the month. Buy a 2009 model. Don't buy a 2008 model because it has depreciated for a year already. Do not tell the dealer you are paying cash until after you have made the deal! Dealers don't like cash buyers! Dealers make less money off of cash buyers because they don't get a cut of the financing.
