Why do 2009 model cars come out in 2008?

  1. Auto manufacture start building the new models 2 - 3 years before the release date. There already getting ready for 2010 and 11.
  2. There has to be a cut off date and start date so as to get into the next year, so, the auto companies chose this method. I remember when I was between 7-14 years old it was a big event when all the new cars came out, the dealers would have open house with gifts and games at dealership for families to come by and see the new cars and trucks.
  3. Think about this. If they didn't release any 2009 model cars until Jan 1, 2009 and dealers had a 400 car inventory to fill......then they would have 400 2008 model cars on the lot on Jan 1, 2009 that would now be a year old, and no time to get rid of them. (and nowhere to park all the new ones coming in) If they sold off their 2008s early, then they wouldn't have any inventory while waiting for the year to change. It's a way to stage in the 2009s as the 2008s disappear without affecting inventory in a negative way.
