Is buying for online auction a safe bet?

Hi, I am planning to buy a car upto $5K. Was thinking about getting one from online auction or live auction. Sites like http://www.gov-auctions.org/join.php are in my mind. Did any of you have any experience buying a car online or from live car auction. I dont have much knowledge about cars in general. But wouldnt mind getting a great deal and spending some more to fix it up. Any help would be appreciated!!!

1. The kind of site you mention is not an online auction site. These companies sell directories to live auctions (not online auctions).
