How do i get my mechanic to look at a car for a private sale?

I cant just take it to him with out paying for it but i dont want to pay for it with out having a mechanic look at the engine and transmission.

  1. you can take it to a mechanic with out buying the car, if the seller refuses you have a bad car on your hands.
  2. Go to a local car repair shop (not body shop) or a chain such as Goodyear, Firestone, Pep Boys, or Sears. It will cost you about $100, but it's a good investment if it prevents you from making a multi-thousand (or hundred) dollar mistake. Also get a Carfax vehicle history report -- about $30.
  3. Why bother with a mechanic in the first place, when you (yes, you!) can learn for yourself what to pay attention to? Take matters into your own hand! Check my sources below for information on buying used cars.
