Canceling Geico car insurance?
I've had Geico insurance on my car for the past year and I've found a much better rate elsewhere and plan to switch. I'm in Virginia. How do I go about canceling with Geico? Do I have to wait until a certain time (end of 6mos, etc) or can I do it at any time? Is there a cancellation fee? Thanks!

- You can cancel your insurance at any time for any reason. Just call them up and tell them you found a cheaper rate with another company. They will try and spit some bull at you to try and stay with them. Be firm in your choice and you should be fine. Plus if you had already payed that months insurance they should reimburse you if you cancel within that month.
- Usually you'll have to put the cancel request in writing; this protects both you and the company. They'll also likely "short rate" you--not return quite all the unearned premium, but the shortage gets lower the later in the term you cancel. That's intended to discourage early cancellations. Several askers here have complained about a $50 cancellation fee from one company, but I don't know if Geico is one of them; check to find out for sure.
- There is no cancellation fees. There is no waiting time. Anytime, Anywhere Whenever you find a new insurance, you can sign up with the new company and the new company will inform your old insurance company about the change. For your decency, you can inform your insurance comapny tooo.
- These is no cancellation fees unless your within your first year of coverage. Just make sure your new carrier takes up where Geico leaves off.
