How to register a Classic Car without a Title...???!!!!?

Ok here is the story...in Nov of 2006 I purchased a 1967 Chevy Impala from a Private owner in ALABAMA...The seller advised that he didn't have the title but that I didn't need it to get it registered- So the next day I checked with AL DMV and I was advised that this was true because of the vehicles age... Anyway, @ the time I lived in NJ and because of braking issues with the vehicle I was unable to take it with me...so I left it @ my mom's in AL and never had it registered...it just basically sat in the yard... fast forward to Nov of 2008- I decided that I could not restore the car as I had intended 2 yrs earlier and put the car up for sale on Ebay- Had a great buyer and now He states that he can't get the car registered because Texas will NOT acknowledge the bill of sale and is DEMANDING a title...which I do NOT have... For some reason I was under the strange impression that each state understood ans accepted that vehicles of that age may not have a title and would register the car with just a bill of sale... If anyone is @ all knowledgeable about this kind of circumstance...Your input would be invaluable to me @ this time...thanx in advance :)

  1. maybe he could explain to them what happened. or register it in another state. there must be a way.
  2. Hi there, It actually sounds like your buyer has changed his mind and is trying to get out of the deal. Unfortunately this happens a lot on eBay. However, for his and your information, you can check out this site that lists the antique/classic registering requirements for all states: http://search.dmv.org/dmv/antique%20car%20registration I purchased an out of state vehicle that was over 30 years old that did not have a title. My state accepted the bill of sale and the previous owners registration information. Every state is different though and the website referenced should help you find the info you might need. If you have to re-post the ad on eBay, be sure and mention in the text that you do not have a title. Best of luck to you!
