how the model of car is determined ? like 2008 model, 2009 model........?

we are buying a car this month end, around 28 th .we will do registration in 2009. so model of car is based on sale order date or registration date.

  1. It's based on what the manufacturer calls it when they build it. Most domestic cars start their model year off in August. Therefore everything built from Aug 2008 to Aug 2009 is called a 2009 model and the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) which is used to identify and register for as long as it lives shows it as a 2009 model car.
  2. it doesn't matter when you buy or register car. The model year is the same. you could be buying a car that is model year 2004. is not about the sell date. It's the year the manufacturer made it or intended to be on sale. Like with Playstation. You can't call the Playstation I a Playstation III because you just bought it last week. Just like you can't say a car is model year 2008 only because you bought it this year if the car came out in 2003. Another example is Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista. They are all 'improvements' over the model before it. So if a car is model 2009, that means it's an 'improvement' of the 2008 model. Think of it as the year for which it was meant.
  3. It's based on the manufacturers model year designation. It doesn't matter whn it was built, sold or registered. You can buy a 2008 Ford Taurus that was built in 2007 and not sold until Jan 2009, but it's still a 2008 Taurus.
  4. They gear up for the next year around May. Anything produced when they start up around August would be the next model year.
  5. The manufacturer decides what he is going to call it.
  6. Manufacturing date counts. You'll get 2009 model only after March. If you buy a car now it will be a 2008 model, registered in 2009.
  7. Model year of a car is based on the date it was manufactured, not when it is sold or registered.
