How do I register my car in a different state?

I'm planning on moving to a different state, and I'm going to have to renew my plates this coming March. My dad is the cosigner on my vehicle, and I have a feeling that I will be moved out well before the March due date arrives. The states involved are Indiana (departing from) and Virginia (going to). What are typical vehicle registration policies, especially for people who register their vehicles in a different state? Do I have to modify my title in any way in order to register my vehicle's plates? Will I have to renew my driver's license, and if so, will I have to retake the drivers test? Finally, do I need my cosigner's signature in order to finalize any paperwork?

  1. you r in luck...Virginia is the easiest in the USA...just show old lic...get new...maybe eye test only....show title get new plates [or tags as they call them]...you just sign you have insurance [affidavit] they have 100 different plates and personalized ones only cost 10 dollars extra...welcome to VA.... [you can get a handgun without permit and No waiting period!]
  2. It's pretty simple. Once you establish a place to live in the new state, simply go to the new state's DMV office and register your car there. . You'll get a new registration and new tag. You will also have to get a new drivers' license in the new state. You must also notify your insurance company. If you insurance company is not licensed in your new state, you will have to find a new company. You might have pay sales tax. It won't affect your title. Your loan is not affected, except that you must notify the loan company that you have a new address.
