How to handle insurance issues when buying first car in California?

I am an adult. I want to buy a car from someone who lives in town. However, I do not have any car insurance now. As I understand, you usually need to present your car to get auto insurance. How do I work out insurance issues during that brief time when I go pick up the car and then drive to a place to get signed up for insurance?

  1. Jss, When you buy a car and you get a temp reg to drive around the same is with your insurance. Here is what I did in Cerritos CA with aaa 1) take photos of all four sides of car 2) get the VIN and mileage 3) Copy of bill of sale and temp reg They gave me a liability insurance policy for 2 days and then was able to get full coverage, but I waited cause I had to do some carb work. But at least I had coverage to get the car home, 71 Challenger. If you live just a few miles from home just drive it. But it is safer if you have it towed home, as long as the bill wont brake the bank Now the wife sold her Camaro and made the buyer go with her and they transferred title right there at AAA and the guy had AAA so they were able to insure the car right then and there Good Luck, hope this helps
