Overhaulin'

I'm confused about selling my car - can I go back on a deal before it is finalized?

I have a 98 Dodge Neon with a bad engine - listed the car at $700 thinking I would get $500 for it. I need to get rid of it asap because of parking issues. One of the first people who contacted me lowballed me at $400 but I accepted because I didn't know if I would be contacted by anyone else - hello, not running! - and because I need to get rid of it asap. After I did this I was told that I shouldn't have agreed to the sale. The guy was on his way over so I was told to not contact anyone else and that I'm stuck for it. 2 guys came over and said that they would buy it IF they could find a cheap motor, asked me to take it off the website, and left a credit card as a guarantee that they will buy it. I made out a bill of sale stating that the sale wasn't finalized. Did I do this wrong? Can I contact other people to get a better deal? I was told not to back out because I am female and doing this alone, and the guys might be angry to find that I went back on the sale. Is this a good sale?

  1. First of all a credit card is meaningless, what can you do with it? Sell it to the first buyer with cash only to meet your price. Since you have only a short time. Sell it as is condition and state that on the reciept and file the papers with your state ASAP. These cars are prone to blowing head gaskets, a $700. min job. So gat rid of the headache. and press on.
  2. Don't be intimidated. You own the vehicle and it is yours to do what you want with it until you get your money and you sign the title and hand it to someone. If they give you any problems, call the police at once. There is a state law in Texas against making a threat to harm someone and they can be arrested for giving you a problem. I'll bet there is a similar law were you live. Good luck, I wish I was there to back you up, I was a Deputy Sheriff for 19 years, now retired. - Gary
