how do i sell my car for cash?

my fiance's car is registered in florida but he's had it up here since he was in the army and has not registered it in washington state. we are now moving to alabama and want to sell his car since his is the older one & we don't use it often. how do we go about selling it, through say a dealership or something and do we have to fill out paperwork? it's currently not insured it just sits in our parking lot and we only owe about $3k on it... its a 2004 mazda6

  1. I would try Craigslist. I have had great success selling cars on there and it is free.
  2. put a for sale sign on it
  3. Can't sell it until the loan is paid off, and you have a free and clear title. Unless of course it is not a car loan. If it is a car loan, it sound strange that the lien holder hasn't said or done anything about not having insurance on the vehicle. Presuming the title is free and clear, how can someone test drive the car without insurance on it? Do you have a current registration and plates? Not sure you can without insurance!!! A dealer may buy it, but how do you get it to a dealer if it isn't insured?? Round and round you go... If/when you sell it you just need to fill out the back of the title to the purchasers name, address, mileage, date and sign it over to whoever. Good luck
  4. OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO FILL OUT PAPERWORK - how ELSE would you transfer ownership? Craigslist is a fantastic way to sell just about anything, and it is FREE. I strongly advise you find someone to take a few pictures of the car and put that in your listing. DO NOT take it to a dealership, they will give you a fraction of what it is worth. Go to kellybluebook.com and find out exactly what your specific car is selling for. The FACT that you do NOT have a "clear title", meaning you do not have the pink slip, means you will have to PAY OFF your loan BEFORE the new buyer can transfer the car in to their name. That can be tricky - call the LOAN company and find out EXACTLY what the PAYOFF is on your car if you were to pay it off now. It most likely will be less than you think. In your ad, make SURE you STATE that you will ONLY accept CASH - but chances are nobody is going to want to give you cash without you handing them the title ("pink" slip). Go online to your states DMV website (Washington?) - you can find just about any answer to any question you have. AND, do yourself a big favor and find a friend that has sold cars before to help you out.
