Overhaulin'

What is the number of unsold new (2008/2009) cars sitting on dealers lots currently? Any credible estimates?

Anyone know? I drive by MASSIVE inventories of 500 to 700 unsold cars sitting on dealer lots....the car selling 'model' is unquestionably broken. MAIN QUESTION: Do you know the rough figure of unsold 2008, early 2009 models sitting on dealer lots now? Where would i find this information? (Also, is there a way of knowing/stats of how many USED cars are sitting on their used lots at the new dealers location.... giving a total number of unsold cars, new and used) Thanks for your help

  1. I don't know the answer, but that's an interesting question. On the news yesterday they were showing acres of foreign import cars sitting in the ports because they've got no where to move them to---showrooms and car lots are filled. They aren't selling any better now than the American built cars. The Wall Street crisis made it next to impossible to get loans to buy cars.
  2. Nobody knows. We do know that without available credit very few people buy new cars. As credit is now restricted it stands to reason that that there are fewer buyers. On the other hand I suspect that folks that repair cars will have a bull market going in a few months as people decide to try to get a few more miles out their old but still williing wheels. This car business is one reason why I'm not convince a bail out of banks is such a wise choice. I would have preferred that the Federal Government had set up another Bank of the United States..the one Andy Jackson killed off, to lend money directly to credit worthy applicants. That way We the People would not only get our money back, but we'd get a little vigerish on the other end...probably enough to lower taxes to the point that even the sour apples of the right would crack a grin. Of course that would be 'socialism' and no matter how much sense it makes it ain't gonna' happen. Dumb and dumber!
