Selling car & have current CA smog cert from biannual inspection. Do I need another one just to sell?

I've read the CA DMV transfer title page over & over. It doesn't really answer my question: I want to sell my 1991 car. I have a smog cert. good for another 8 months. But do I have to get a new one just to sell?

  1. As quoted from: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm "When a car is sold, who is responsible for the inspection? The seller is required to provide the buyer with a valid smog inspection certification at the time of the sale or transfer. Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance. The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification)." <-------- THIS PART! I would suggest going to this web page and reading it over for your own sake, and see what you can make of it. From my point of view, it seems as though if the certification was submitted within the last 90 days then the answer would be no. However, if it has been longer you may have to get another. Hope this helps!
