What's the best way to sell my old car?

Right now it doesn't run. I'm thinking it just needs a new battery. I definitely want to get the most money out of it as I can. Should I just sell the parts in it? Will a car lot come tow it and then buy it? Or how about putting an ad in the paper or online? It's a 98 Pontiac Grand AM. Thanks for advice..

  1. If you want the most money and it just needs a battery I would recommend replacing the battery and then trying to sell it. Otherwise, you could try a free online site, such as craigslist and seeing if it sells. Based on personal experience on running cars, I've found that listing a car autotrader tends to help it sell for a little more, but you have to pay for it. I haven't had too much luck with the local papers. I know where I live there are car lots that will buy it and tow away, but they tend to give you very little for the car. I've never had luck parting out a car. Good luck selling it!
  2. A 1998 Grand Am should still be worth $2000 to $3000 if it is in decent shape. Definitely worth the price of a battery in order to get the best dollar. Forget about a dealer, they won't offer you more than a token amount. Since you mention selling the parts, I would say that if you have some high end accessories then definitely pull them out and replace them with standard equipment. Once a vehicle gets to be ten years old, people are not willing to pay much for the accessories so you will get more by selling them separately. For example, if you have a set of high end wheels and tires, you can probably sell them and not lose much on your cars final selling price. I hope this helps Phil G
