What is the penalty for selling a car without a title in va?

I had a project car that ran well and wanted to get rid of to free up some time and money and will be finished with my tour of duty here and will be leaving the state at the end of the year. I sold the car for 200 bucks much less than what i've already put into it and bought it for. On the bill of sale I put the crap I see everywhere "As Is" and also wrote "No Title" on the bill of sale. He knew there was no title and didn't have a problem with it and it's also another reason i let it go so cheap. Well about a week later he called asking if i could help him get the title because he couldn't do anything to get a new one because the old title wasn't in his name. I said no problem and went down to the dmv to find i needed to get a power of attoney because the car was still in my Mom's name which i bought the car from. that took about 1 1/2 weeks to mail the paperwork done there and for her to get it signed and noterized and mail back. I went to the dmv with the papers they said i needed to then tell me that since the car was never registered in VA that I would have to get the title from the FL DMV. I wish they would have said the the first time. Now the guy i sold it to is leaving me nasty messages. I'm doing my best to keep my cool and still trying to help. I left him a message saying he could do a few options. 1. Bring the car back and I'll give him his money back 2. Give me a money order for the title from FL or 3. Call my mother (LOL) and send her the money order for the title. I wanted to know what I should maybe do and I can't seem to find a penalty for selling a car without a title and would like to know.

  1. As long as there are no questions about ownership, you should be okay. Biggest problem with not having the title..is it's well stolen. But I doubt thats the case. You advertised it as it was so you really didn't do anything wrong. The Virginia DMV is such a pain in the ass.
