Debit card - Checking account question - No money - Help?

Ive got to buy a car part. The part costs 300.00 I really really need it today. I have 190 in my bank checking/debit card I get paid tomorrow 800 direct deposit in the am. I go through US BANK Anyways can i go to the store and buy it today and use it as a debit? a credit? will it go through? Usually when I do something as a debit it takes 3-4 days to clear my bank--- Anyways I know I should wait but I really cant. Its kinda inportant I do it. What could happen? Give me suggestions! Am I safe to buy it? Will it go though as Accepted? Or declined?

  1. Run your debit card as credit and it should go through. Running it as credit will take a few extra days to get removed from the account. It is never a good idea to purchase something you don't have the money for, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
  2. No, debit card transactions come out of your account almost immediately and using your debit card as a "credit" card will be the same, because it's not actually credit...it will come out of you account too. I am with US Bank too and my debit card transactions usually beat me home from the store when I check them online. They post to my account very quickly. Blame computers! Gone are the days when you could charge things and they wouldn't show up on your account for a week. Everything is virtually instantaneous now. NOTE: I see some people have suggested writing a check...that doesn't always work either because a lot of places now have a scanner that reads your account number off the check and withdraws the money out of your account just like a debit card. The checks are only accepted as a courtesy.
  3. I run into things like this myself. You are always taking a chance....I am guessing the debit card would get declined, but writing a check should be ok. Even if they have a check reader it still takes a day to go through.
  4. Write a check, thats the only thing I can suggest. Checks take longer to clear your account
  5. Even though your check is due to deposit at 8 am, it will take 1 full work day to clear. NSF fees at my bank are $35 / transaction. Make sure the money is cleared & collected not just available (2 totally different things). Go to anyone. Give them collateral in exchange for a one week loan. Make sure the collateral is really expensive. At least 3 times the actuall cost. Make sure it's someone you trust. Put it all in writing, that if you do not pay them back, they need to keep the item forever.
  6. You will be ok. Unless you have Bank of America if you have a credit transaction that is pending and they makes your available balance negative they will charge you an OD fee even if its pending. But if you dont have BofA then yes you will be ok. And you are right if you use it as credit it can take up to 3-5 business days to post to your account. So if you get paid tomorrow and you go make your deposit because that transaction post then you will not get an OD charge because you covered it. And the transaction should go throught becuase banks give you OD "limit" which is a certain amount that you build up by being in good standing with the bank. For example if you have built up $400 in OD "limit" and you have 100 bucks in your account and you need to buy 300 dollar product then it will go through because you have 100 dollars already so you take the 100 plus the 400 so the computer allows you to spend 500 dollars. Hope ive helped. You should be fine.
