Overhaulin'

My dad wants to buy a car in the US and sell it in Canada because it's cheaper over here. Is it worth it?

My dad thinks that all you have to do is just buy the car here and just put it in the Classifieds over there waiting for it to sell. He doesn't listen to me when I say that's probably not worth it because I'm sure there's more to it than just putting the ad. For example, paying taxes to import the car there, changing the info with the Canadian DMV, installing daytime lights (reqd. in Canada), etc. I'm sure people wouldn't be dumb enough to buy a car that was meant to be used in the US.

  1. i live in Canada, and people do buy cars in the US because it is so much cheaper, but after you pay taxes and duties, its not that much cheaper.
  2. It is not worth the same because of the difference in the amount og currency here and in cananda. OUr money is worth more, so say if he buys a car for 1000, he would need to sell it for enough more to make up the difference in the exchange rate, pkus whatever he wanted to make in profit, unless the buyer pays in US dollars...
  3. Are you Canadian? If you are then buying a car would be cheaper for you if you purchase it in the United States. The value of the American dollar had dropped significantly enough that many people from out of the U.S. are taking advantage of shopping here. As for selling it and making a profit, I don't think that the margin will be big enough for it to be worth it, and besides, don't other Canadians have the same idea? Wouldn't they just buy the car in America, rather than going through you? I just don't think that it is a worthy investment. Buying the car for you own personal use from the U.S. would be a better idea.
  4. UNLESS HE GETS A REALLY GOOD DEAL TO OFFSET ALL OF THE OTHER CHARGES.
