I recently passed my driving test. I just got my driver's licence in the mail. Now , I'm thinking about buying my first car. My father suggested I buy some "piece of junk" before I get a brand new car. Well, I'm a fan of anything that's "old fashioned". Beetles are old. They're cheap , good on gas , don't go too fast etc I've heard Beetles are chick cars. True or false ? I don't like the new beetles. I heard they come with a flower pot vase. Do the old ones have one ? Do you think Beetles are good for first time drivers ? What do the ladies think of guy's driving old vw beetles ?

The New Beetles are the older ones are more masculine to me....Most people will still give you crap but its still a leg up from say a mini van a pt cruiser....I think its kinda hot

Be yourself, its uncool to try and be cool. Besides with about 6 billion people on the planet you can hardly impress every single one, a few will do, that's what cool is.
old vw beetles kick ass! if i found a good deal on one i would drive it. i'm gonna tell you now, girls don't care what you drive. at least not ones worth your time. my first car was a '74 toyota celica, total P.O.S. that never stopped me from getting women togo out with me.
new Beatles are for woman but the old ones are bad ass just make sure you and your father look it over real good before buying it mostly for rust damage in the floor and frame and make sure there is a maintenance history of some sort because they are not cheap to fix and if you get one with allot of problems it will definitely take all the fun out of having your first car and not to mention you will be broke. but there awesome i had one there like a tank and you can do so much to them if your into doing modifications to it. i knew a guy that had one and he raced it on the track in the 1/4 mile he beat a dodge viper. anyway have fun and do not worry the old ones are not for chicks
I always assume a guy who drives a Beetle is either gay, very young, very old or very short. I think the new & old Beetles are equally as uncool. I think only the new ones have the vases. I don't have a Beetle although I would love one. I've heard they're hard to repair, as all Volkswagens are, with hard to get parts & expensive to fix. I don't know if they're good cars to drive for first time drivers.
Old beetles are not chick cars. Theyre just plain awesome. New beetles are super girly, but the old ones are just sweet. Chicks dig em too. that being said, dont get one for your first car. Almost everyone wrecks their first car and those things are absolute deathtraps. Completely and utterly unsafe. hard to keep running alot of the time too.
hahahah! Flower pot vase! Must be a reference to being a "hippy-mobile" I personally think they are a bit. The new ones completely are. I had to drive my buddy's wife's while he picked up a uhaul and I felt like the biggest pussy. The old one however simply can be. If you leave it stock and put just one wrong ornament/sticker/mirror dangly-thing you're a fag. My dad had one also. He, however, had the baja conversion. I must admit that not only did it look neat but I could see the functionality in something like that. Also, I think I heard you can adjust the timing or something so it goes screamin' fast. It'll kill it quick though so don't even try. Also, I'm pretty sure they didn't have A/C. All in all, you can do better. If you are into yuppy-mobiles as opposed to hippy-mobiles you can go for the Jeep. I HIGHLY recommend the Cherokee. Not the Grand Cherokee, but the discontinued regular one. They aren't the best on gas but they have an in line 6 engine which I'm sure will last long after you're sick of it. I think they are mostly all 4 wheel drive which can be some fun or make winter snow driving loads easier. I've heard several stories of 250k mile Cherokees that still need no major repairs. It's forgiving, has room, and ample braking, which in my opinion is very important starting out, and they generally have a low resale value which I cannot figure out for the life of me. I'm getting one when my current car pukes. I almost wish it would so I don't have to wait. They are only getting older now. I suggest you grab one while you can.
classic beetles are cool! the new beetles are not for guys. the flower vase was an old tradition or option but i know no guys who use one. the classic beetle is a great car, i have one and wouldn't trade it for nothing becuase they are cool, cheap, and easy to work on if you need to.
I had one in high school, and it was awesome. We actually had a VW club. It had suicide doors, a Porche engine, racing seats, shaved door handles. It was awesome.
the bud vase in the new beetle is an option, just as it was way back when. old beetles are always cool. they're also cheap to keep & run. having had a few, you can't really go wrong, as long as you're ok with the regular valve adjustments. lengthy oil change intervals are definitely out of the question, too. very dependable, these little bugs. if you ever decided to modify one, the gates are wide open! there is so much out there for one small car. i agree with some about the whole "new beetle thing". not cool for a guy, but, if that's what finds your lost remote...
Are you confused about your sexuality? The newBeetles is a VW sales ploy - trying to relive a era long gone - the "flower power generation" car of the 60's. Volkswagen never called their Type 1 sedan a beetle. It was a Type 1 sedan. They are trying to sell something by selling the historical nickname. I find that ludicrous. Well, us old hippies are old. We don't buy new cars as much(the old ones have not died yet) All hippies found them cool. So do guys who bush buggy with them. I have driven mine places where 4x4's can't go because the 4x4 is too large and heavy. They are a fun car. Thing is, they are not made anymore and to find one cheap is getting harder and harder as people are hanging onto them. Don't go too fast? 90 is fast enough to kill you. Besides the speed limit is only 55. Besides they get scary handling wise at the top end. The ladies are only interested in the pocket book. But if you are spending most of your money for gas and oil, there is only change in there.
Well Look around for a beetle now. Aim for the 1967 and later years. In 67 they changed the front suspension from King and link pin to the modern Ball joint. It also has independent rear suspension. If you find a Super Beetle that's reasonable, go for it. It has Struts in the front. A few of the best things about a old beetle is that parts are everywhere and cheap.
Hey.. the older the bug the better. But better still (from your male point of view), I get more women coming over to ask about my restored Bug then I do from my restored and decidedly masculine Detroit iron (an old El Camino). They are a great conversation starter... But, you are wrong about it being or becoming a piece of junk. The prices on the old VW's are going UP (even the rustbuckes).. not down. So buy early. .
i think they old ones are awesome. i also grew up wanting a bug my whole life! my whole life i am not even joking. i also stop to admire a nice redone bug. i would do it.
I love air cooled bugs & buses...but they're not gonna protect you much in an accident. Keep that in mind. IF you go for a New beetle...yer safe. my first car was a 1969 vw bus..then a 71 bus.... guys in air cooled are automatically assumed they're hobbyists...especially if it's a real sweet ride. so...it's your choice man.

I have seen some at shows that had them. I believe it's a standard feature on the new bugs but you don't have to put a flower in it!
They are amazing first cars. An old Volkswagen Beetle is a real guys car. They got a 4 speed stick, you fix them yourself, no frills, what is not guy about it? I am a guy and I love it. Look in my answers for an answer to a question asking about what type of first car they should get. Mine is the really long one that was chosen as best answer. It's the fourth question from the last. That should make you want to get one. Believe me, they are simply amazing. To put it to you simply, YOU WILL LOVE YOUR VOLKSWAGEN.
