When you buy a car and pay cash for it, how long does the dealer have to give you the title?

Don't guess at this! I just bought a used car and paid cash for it. The dealer gave me a 30 day tag and said he would send me the title. I signed the papers and got the 30 day tag but still haven't got the title. I called(it's been 10 days) and they said that they have 30 days to getme the title. Is this correct??

  1. depends on the state. many times the dealer doesn't actually own the car. they may have financed the purchase of a truckload of cars and have to wait on their leinholder.
  2. The state you are in would make all the difference in the world. In PA the dealer mails the original to the state, they add your name to it and then mail it back to you. The state holds it long enough to make sure that the tax amount you paid matches the aprox. value of the vehicle and then sends it to you if all is correct.
  3. The dealer sends the title to the state for transfer. You should be receiving it any time now. In answer to your question. Yes it's correct.
  4. he's right he does have 30 days then after that you can sue him for failure to deliver title .Don't worry he probably had to pay the car off to get your title for you
