Why does my car insurance with Geico contain a charge for a Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund Emergency?

Why am I being taxed this just because I buy car insurance?

  1. I presume it is on your collision and comprehensive policy. Since FL and many other Gulf and Atlantic coastal states are prone to hurricanes, the insurance company is going to try to limit their exposure to hurricane risk by transferring that risk to those who live in that area through higher premiums. I can't see justifying that charge on a liability policy since you wouldn't be covered anyway. But if they pay the politicians enough money, they can get anything written into law.
  2. Because insurance is a perfect example of (the dreaded) Socialism. Everyone is the same, everyone shares in everything. A person is no longer a person, just a piece of the whole picture. You must pay for others whether you want to or not.
  3. Yes, sounds like a crock. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than
