Overhaulin'

How would YOU modify a standard car?

Except by giving it a body kit, and fat arse rims. I mean engine wise... Cheers x Tips on an MK1 polo?

  1. get a racing muffler I think it adds like 20 Horsepower
  2. punch some holes in the exhaust and rip the roof off with bolt cutters
  3. racing cams, performance crankshaft and pistons, high flow header/exhaust, high flow airfilter, turbo/supercharger.
  4. First thing everyone thinks of is a cold air intake to replace the stock limited airflow filter system. Another quick engine upgrade is a performance fuel rail and injectors. Other easy ones are lightweight and performance manifolds, lightweight battery, perhaps even after market lightweight headers More difficult upgrades could be something like a turbo charger, which would typically require the removal of the air conditioner's compressor to make room for a turbo, and an Mk1 Polo might not even be compatible.
  5. Add a super charger. I really like the look of the GM 6-71. Add 50% hp with one mod.
  6. Here's my mods - engine/performance wise - for my sbc Camaro: Cold air intake; Underdrive pulleys; Ported aftermarket intake manifold; Larger throttle body and airfoil; Ported cylinder heads; Performance cam/lifters/springs; Tubular exhaust headers; 3" high flow catalytic converter; 3" Exhaust; Centerforce clutch; Skip-shift eliminator; Aftermarket ECU. First off - focus on improving intake efficiency - if its a carb setup, ensure that, at a minimum, your carb is built and tuned for your performance mods and goals. Intakes, even stock ones, can see pretty decent hp gains from a gasket-match port job. Then, the cylinder heads - again, even stock ones can be improved with a basic port and polish and match. If you have low compression, a deck job can give you a little more power. And camshafts should be available to wake up the performance of your engine, but you should get the heads and intake ready to take best advantage of the cam. And finally, a good exhaust. From there, the rest can be pulled from other MK owners, who may know specific tips-and-tricks. Good luck!
