Is is possible to buy car insurance without owning a car yet?
I don't own a car right now so no car insurance right now obviously. But is it possible to buy some type of coverage before I get or even know what type of car I will be getting? The scenario would be buying a car from an auto auction and how I would go about driving it home.

- Nope, you cannot do that. I have a company car and wanted insurance just so I would not have to pay a bundle when I rent a car for vacations and stuff. The insurance agent said no way, Jose. Even though my name isn't Jose.
- no because they need to know which car you have before they say yes.
- No because the make, model, year etc will have an impact on the amount of insurance. However, if you call an insurance company you can get a temporary insurance slip to be able to drive it home. You will also need license plates.
- no. you can't get coverage before you buy a car. get a car at the auction then haul it home. or just drive it home without insurance. or call your insurance agent right after you buy it and give them the information and then you are covered, you just don't have proof.
- When you get insurance, they will ask you for the VIN number of the vehicle you will be driving.
- You must know the make, model, vin on a car before insuring it. You go back the next day to get the car.
- No its not. Insurance companies need to know what vehicle they are insuring. They do this by going off of the VIN number on the vehicle you are insuring. When you get your vehicle at the auction just call the insurance company. Its a really quick process that can be done right after you purchase your vehicle.
- No, to get insurance you have to have a car that would be covered. But it's a very good idea to talk to a local independent agent now, and give him all the information except the specific vehicle. That way once you find the right car, all it would take it a phone call to get coverage. Most auctions have a fax number that can be used to fax your proof of insurance to you so you can drive it off the lot. If not, have the agent send it as a text message, if you happened to be stopped on the way to get the card, you would at least have that.
- THEY would love it, but you need a vin #, so no.
- Yes, I can't remember what the policy is called but it's for someone who has a license but no car, it's so that you are covered if you borrow a friends car or what not. I believe it would work in this situation also.
