What is a rear end and how much does it cost to repair ? chevy caprice?

I have a 1992 chevy caprice classic that a guy said i need a rear end after realizing some thic fluid was leaking near my muffler how much will part and labor cost to fix this if its even the problem. My car will now move into any gears. while i was drivin it turned off i restarted it then tried move into drive but wouldnt move it squealed or roarin sound. i pushed it over the road then had to put the emercency break down because it wouldnt stay in park. chekd my transmission fluid it was normal and clear no burn smell frm my car

1. the rear end is where the back tires are at. you have a long housing where the axles goes in and in the middle you have a differential where your drive shaft hooks to. you don,t need a whole rear end, just the inspection plate gasket and pinion seal. your talking about 2 different things here. the rear end sits clean back to the rear and the transmission is bolted to the engine.
