Can you sell a car directly to the dealership for cash?

I really have no clue if you can or not. I am wanting to sell my SUV cause of its poor gas mileage and dull handling, But i don't want to buy something from any dealership.

  1. If they want it they will buy it. No way of knowing until you ask them. You can also sell it to a CarMax dealer. http://www.carmax.com/ Keep in mind you are going to get royally fleeced if they do want to buy it. You should really sell it to a private party if you want to get what it is worth.
  2. Yes, If the price your looking to get, sounds good to them..well then i can see them giving you your cash..or a check made out to you..from that Dealer.
  3. Best bet is to sell it privately for its Blue Book price (link below). You could sell it to Carmax, or another dealership that might really want to buy it, but you are only going to get the Black Book value.. An example of the difference - in '03 I bought a '95 Camaro from a friend, for $6000. The Blue Book value of the car was $6200. Out of curiosity (about two weeks after buying it), I went to Carmax to find out what they would give me for it, and their offer was $2300. So, obviously, you are going to get screwed if you sell it to a dealership. If you decide to sell it privately, check out http://www.kbb.com to find the blue book value for it. Good luck!
