- If you can't come to an agreement to resolve the issue, you will probably need to talk to a lawyer
- You have a civil matter, a car you own and owe on you gave to him as evidenced by him on the registration and insurance. The police can't help you. You are probably going to take a hit in your credit for this one if you can't resolve it with him. Sorry.
- this is a stickey wicket you have here. my first question would be how did your boyfriend register a car that belongs to you? check the title for additional owners, if his name is on the title, then you have no case. if not then he may have a problem with a forged registration, and a technically stolen car.
- Remove the tags and either return them to your ex-boyfriend or turn then into the DMV. Get the vehicle insured under your name _BEFORE_ you start driving it. You may want to tell your ex-boyfriend that you now have your own insurance. But back to another problem... he has your car and won't give it back? As mentioned, probably a civil matter as you allowed him to use the vehicle. You may want to see if the police will accept a theft report. It's called theft by conversion. Your intent was not for your ex-boyfiend to never return the car... which is happening now. So it started out as you loaning the vehicle to him but now that this "loan" has expired, it converts into a theft. Again, it's better for the police to understand that your ex-boyfriend knew he should have returned the vehicle.
- Should have thought of this before you entered into this arrangement (and you should have had a spare key made). Either work it out with him, or get an attorney and sue him.
