Car for sale: Engine Knock?

Someone near me is selling a car I want at a cheap price, but he admitted that there is an engine knock. Now, if I was considering the car, I would obviously take it to my mechanic to have him check it out. My question is I understand the major things that it need such as to be rebuilt; however, what could be some of the minor issues and the costs associated with that?

  1. The engine knock may take time but will get worse. Your are going to need an engine or a total engine rebuild.
  2. there is no such thing as a minor engine knock. You probably have a burned crank bearing causing the knocking sound from no oil. Now where did that oil go? Did it leak out or does the engine burn oil? These are the things you need to know before you buy this car. It will run into major bucks to rebuid that engine correctly. good luck
