Can someone tell me what's the difference between these engines please?
I want to buy a truck but I'm clueless when it comes to trucks. I'm a girl that loves race cars. I have a 3000gt Twin Turbo and want a fast fun truck with the fastest engine, most torque, greatest hp and all that but once I start looking on these car sale sites it becomes all confusion to me. Of course the SRT-10 with the viper engine would be a perfect match but 50G outta my budget so if someone could help me figure out next best thing to buy I'd appreciate it. I need a Extended Cab (Husband can't fit comfortably in Sonoma, Rangers or Dakotas too small). I love Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierras. Dodges and Fords ok but more of a Chevy, GMC family. (u know how that is lol). I see alot of talk about 5.3L V8 Vortec (Chevy/GMC), 5.7L V8 Hemi (Dodge), V10 8.0L (Ford/Dodge), 6.6L Duramax V8 Turbo, 6.0L V8, Supercharged, Chipped, Diesel, Fuel Injected and when it says diesel like the Duramax is that the engine that sounds like a school bus? I'm looking for more of that deep Flowmaster roar, not short bus driver sound lol. (sorry for all the questions and making it seem like your ASE exam lol, but thanks for all the help in advance)

- For diesel, stick with Dodge or Ford. I like the Ford better because of the cab/body and it has a good engine (7.3). But I have a lot of respect for the Cummins as well...but not the truck its in. The 6.0 Powerstroke needs to have the factory head studs replaced with aftermarket as soon as you buy it. They had problems that when the engine got hot, the studs would expand and blow a head gasket. The Cummins gets great fuel milage and has a lot of power. I have a 96 Powerstroke that has 580,000 miles and just now getting new injectors. It has not had any major repairs....and its all stock. Dont get the V10....My dad has the Excursion and my uncle has a F350 with that engine. It gets 10-12mpg.....NO LOAD. With a small load, then it drops to around 5mpg. And it has no passing power. Stick with the V8 set-up
- wow. diesel and fast don't belong in the same sentense when it comes to most of the ones you see on the road. you'll get better fuel economy with a diesel (most of the time) and if you want to pull something it's the only way to go. if you want a diesel stay the hell away from ford and chevy (weather you're a gm family or not) the powerstroke (7.3,6.4,and the 6.0) are all worthless peices of junk. that's why they're known as a "POWERCHOKE" I HATE chevy but a duramax is better than a powerchoke however they're also known as a "DURATRASH or a DURAS***" if you want a diesel a dodge is the ONLY diesel pickup to go with. they hold peak torque for 1100rpm. however they're also "governed" at 2700rpm for the drop off in power after that. granted they're not really governed but they might as well have one on there. a cummins also known as a "CUMMAPART" in the trucking industry and ONLY in the trucking industry is the best diesel you'll find that's dropped in a pickup. Now for gassers. as I said before I hate chevy but when it comes to a half ton I'd recommend one. especially if you're going to go with a manual. dodge has better clutcches than ford and combined but fords pressure plates are absolutly worthless (I know I went through 2 clutchs in a matter of 5000 miles) and I was blamed for it until a guy that worked for ford stuck up for me and said that it wasn't my fault. chevy's got the good gasoline motors, dodge is 2nd and well ford is just junk PERIOD! my family has owned all of the big 3 chevy dodge and ford. our old s10 needed new gaskets 2 times a year (aluminum intake and a cast iron block on a 2.8 don't mix) then we had 2 fords and the first one needed a valve body at 35k it's had 2 wheel bearings, a crank seal, ball joints (2 times and needs them again) and in 6 months it'll need a rear end hopefully the da** thing will blow before then so I've got something to do around here. The other was the ranger that needed 2 3 clutches, a cv boot (that was my fault), needed a rear end when I got rid of it, valve cover gaskets (got rid of it before I replaced them), and right before it was traded in it had to have a rear main thrown in it so I have nothing good to say about ford. and then I've got the dodge diesel and that's by far the best truck we've owned it's rock solid still and it's an 01. it's on the origional clutch and it's still very firm. and probably has another 20-30k on it, it's got the typical oil leak (no big deal with a cummins they all leak oil right along with cats) but it's a pan gasket and they leak down the front of the engine which is typically caused by stupidity (not emptying the blow by canister when the oil is changed) it's got enough power to pull anything that can be hooked up to it (rated for 20k as it sits right now) it's got plenty of room I've got a quad cab long box and we can fit 5 in there (6 if it wasn't a manual) I'm 5'10 and can sleep in it comfortabily so when it comes to what we've owned the dodge is by far the best. we've always pretty much been a dodge family...up until I was born then it turned into chevy and ford until now. and those are the best we've owned and it's all we're going to own from now on. My advise is chevy for gas and dodge for diesel and ford if you want to take it to a scrap yard. that's my advise for you.
