How much does a dealer make off a car sell?

I'm curious how much a dealer makes off a car sell? How much do they profit?

  1. Not an awful lot, really. Especially today where people are better informed on invoice prices, and can get multiple quotes on the net. The exception is a hot selling car like the 2010 Camaro, which has a waiting list. They mark them up a lot. Dealers generally make more money on USED cars and in the service dept.
  2. the gain: ????? the loss: their souls
  3. Dealers for the most part always make sure they get the best deal, there are many people with money, who get bored with a car, trade it like underwear, dealers bid auction prices for everything (CHEAP) THEY LOW BALL people on trade in cars, buy crap cars from auction knowing nothing about them and then dump them on unsuspecting buyers, dealers have huge auctions, and can buy cars cheap all kinds of ways, reposession what ever, and also besides charging thousands of dollars on a car they paid 500 for they make billions in interest from people who finance cars. The invent ways to add money after you buy, they charge you 100 bucks to go to the dmv to register your used car, but they register all the cars they sold that week at the same time, if there is a way to make money off used or new cars, some dealer has though of it. They will get a trade in cheap, and overprice it,some guy comes in with good credit and no brains and walks out after signing a contract with long payments, huge interest, paying more for a used car, than they could have got a new one. Some dealers make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year this way.
  4. A lot in terms in "gross profit". Very little in terms of after overhead net profit. But, car dealers, salesman & f*i guys are all there to make money. If there wasn't money in it for them, they wouldn't be there everyday. Which is why LOTS of them have shut their doors in the last few years.
