If I buy a used car from an individual in New York won't I get a ticket for driving home with no plates?
Can I use the plates from my old car and just transfer them at the DMV? Is there a grace period after buying a car before you get a ticket for not having plates?

- I'm not sure. In alot of states there's a 2 week - 30 day grace period. Just have your reciept and title on you to show the cop it's a recent buy if you get pulled over. I used an 'In Transit' sign i put up on my back window for about 3 days when i bought my last car.
- well even if you did have a grace period how would police know that? just hope you don't get pulled over. i gues just switch the plates before you drive it. good luck!
- Try the in transit sign, but have you paper work with you
- In my state, you have either 10 days or 2 weeks to drive it without a tag provided you have your bill of sale with you. However, they could ticket you for lack of insurance if you dont have proof of that.
