Do I have to buy car insurance to register a car in NY?

I will buy a used car on Monday. I need to get Bill of Sale, Tax form and title of the car. Is there anything else? Can I drive the car to DMV before registering it? Do I have to buy car insurance to register a car in NY?

1. You need car insurance in ANY state. It's illegal to drive a car without it. But you get car insurance after you register your car, if I'm not mistaken. When buying a car, you have a certain amount of time you can drive it around before registering it. I believe it's 30 days after your purchase. During those 30 days, you have to register it, or just be on your way to register it. [I live in NY, and we recently got 2 used cars]
